Commission of Inquiry seeks public assistance to identify individuals present at Cross River Rail worksite incident

5 April 2026

The Commission of Inquiry into the CFMEU and Misconduct in the Construction Industry is seeking public assistance to identify several individuals who were present at the Cross River Rail worksite area near Cope Street, Annerley, on 1 May 2024.

Information provided to the Commission's investigative team indicates that on 1 May 2024, a group of unidentified males, along with a number of previously identified CFMEU members, were present during a confrontational protest at the Cope Street side of the site, following an altercation at a physical picket line on the Dutton Park side of the site earlier that morning. Media footage from the day, broadcast by outlets including 7 News and Nine News, showed a physical confrontation involving multiple individuals near the Cope Street works spilling onto the street before groups dispersed prior to police arrival.

The Commission has been provided with a series of images from investigators capturing fifteen unidentified persons who were present at the site on the day of the incident.

Senior Counsel Assisting, Patrick Wheelahan KC, said, “These individuals were present at a significant incident on the Cross River Rail worksite, and their recollections may help the Commission form a clearer understanding of what occurred that day. We are asking for the public’s assistance to identify them, so that we can speak with them and ensure all relevant perspectives are heard.”

The Commission asks that any member of the public who recognises any of these individuals, or has information that may assist in identifying them, contact the Commission of Inquiry.

Information can be provided confidentially via the tipline: 1800 810 933 or through the Commission’s website.
